Christmas Story Discussion Questions for Kids & Youth

Nine conversation starters on the birth of Jesus (Luke 1–2, Matthew 1–2), graded by age so one printout works for your whole class — younger kids, older kids, and teens — plus a memory verse to send home.

Talk About It — Discussion Questions

Younger kids (ages 6-8)

  1. Mary laid baby Jesus in a manger — a feeding trough for animals. How do you think Mary and Joseph felt that night?
  2. The angel told the shepherds "do not be afraid." When is a time God helped you not be afraid?
  3. The wise men brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What is something you can give to Jesus?

Older kids (ages 9-12)

  1. Why do you think God sent an angel to announce the birth of His Son to ordinary shepherds?
  2. Mary said yes to God even though her life would get harder (Luke 1:38). What does trusting God look like when His plan is not easy?
  3. King Herod and the wise men both heard about the newborn King — but they responded in opposite ways. What made the difference?

Youth (ages 13+)

  1. The name Immanuel means "God with us" (Matthew 1:23). What difference does it make that God came to be WITH us rather than just sending instructions?
  2. Luke roots the story in real history (a real emperor, a real census). Why does it matter that Christmas is history and not just a story?
  3. The first Christmas involved waiting, inconvenience, and danger. How does that compare with how we celebrate it today — and what should we keep at the center?
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”— Luke 2:11 (NIV)
